the timing of this was almost comical i poured my heart into this startup for the last 9 months and had just accepted a leadership role about a month before this news. definitely not the plot twist i saw coming. candidly… this second time i’ve ever been laid off from a job. the first time was when i was 22. i had just moved to san diego & took a job stocking milk in the back of a grocery store to pay the bills. after a week of training me, my manager pulled me aside, handed me a paycheck, and very lovingly told me he could tell i hated stocking milk lol and that he i was meant to follow my heart and find something in alignment not just something that pays bills. not long after, i turned around and fulfilled my dream of becoming a career firefighter and now this! the only reason this moment exists on video is because i had just finished recording a zoom sales call for training and closed the deal right before answering this call with my chief of ops incredible timing. honestly, i’m at peace about it. sometimes the universe makes the decision for you and clears the path when it’s time to move on. whatever’s next is going to be incredible & aligned with me and my gifts. bc the universe is rigged in my favor. onward. ✨ #fyp #layoff #laidoff #unemployment #mindset

No accrual means no payout on termination. With a traditional PTO bank, unused days are often owed to you when you leave. That's a real liability on the company's books. Unlimited PTO eliminates it completely. No baseline creates social pressure. When everyone has 15 days, you use your 15 days. When the policy is unlimited with no defined floor, people look at what their peers take and quietly take less. Nobody wants to be the person who takes the most. There's no guaranteed floor. Unlimited doesn't mean you're entitled to any specific number of days. It means the company reserves the right to define reasonable use however they want. The switch from traditional to unlimited PTO almost always originates in finance, not in HR. It costs the company less than a standard plan while sounding more generous in a job posting. I thanked my company when they let me go with no notice. I tearfully thanked them during my termination call, and publicly thanked them in my LinkedIn announcement post. I did it because I didn’t want to burn any bridges, but also, I just wanted to keep whatever dignity I had left intact. It wasn’t until months later, after I processed my trauma, that I realized I didn’t owe that company anything but my true and honest feelings… Which were that I felt used and like I was merely part of a transaction even after dedicating a year and a half of my life to them. But that’s the thing: everyone who’s ever been affected by layoffs is just a number on a balance sheet. Always have been, always will be. Thanking these companies for the bad financial decisions they’ve made isn’t going to change this fact, so might as well voice your true feelings because others are probably feeling the same way. If you feel angry, resentful, or bitter that you had to pay the price for these bad decisions, express it because that’s normal.
