The hardest person to lead is yourself. It’s far easier to tell others what to do. Maybe you’ve seen the humorous comic strip with the dad who says to his son, “Do as I say, not as I do.” It’s funny for a moment, until we realize that leaders who lead this way are slowly losing all credibility. Leaders: don’t tell others to do something you aren’t willing to do yourself. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to be the one to do everything. Not at all. If you are doing everything yourself, then there’s no room for a team. But always remember—leaders know the way, go the way, and show the way. Are you leading yourself before you lead others?

Lead. Your peers, your employees, your kids, your boss. These leadership principles may have to be modulated based on the individual, but Extreme Ownership and the Laws of Combat are how you should interact and influence every single human being.
