The breathing leaves experiment is a great way to visualize photosynthesis and explain the important role trees and other plants play for life on Earth! All you need is some fresh leaves, a clear glass, water and a sunny spot. Put your leaves in the water and place your container in a sunny window or outside. Wait for about 1 hour. Then check for tiny air bubbles around the leaf. Your leaf has been “breathing”! How it works: Plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. They use the sun’s energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and sugar. The gases carbon dioxide and oxygen travel in and out of the leaf through tiny holes called stomata. Before you collected them, the leaves had already absorbed carbon dioxide. By adding water and sunshine your leaves can go to work. Lucky for us, trees don’t need the oxygen. It’s just a byproduct of making their sugary meal and is expelled through the stomata. By placing the leaf in water, you are trapping the exiting oxygen molecules and are now able to see them! The bubbles are a visible proof that the leaves are “breathing” and producing oxygen. In the mood to plant a tree now? Follow @funplayjoy4kids for more experiments, play inspiration and easy crafts!

Sun Science Series ☀️ | Breathing leaves 🍃 Without the sun, leaves couldn’t do this… The breathing leaves experiment is a great way to visualize photosynthesis and a fascinating conversation starter for kids. And all you need is fresh leaves, a glass of water, and a sunny spot. Place the leaves in the water and leave them in the sun for about an hour. Soon you’ll see tiny bubbles forming on the leaves - like they’re “breathing.” What’s happening? This is photosynthesis in action - and the sun is the key. Plants use sunlight as energy to start a chemical reaction and turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar (their food) and oxygen (just a byproduct for them, but essential for us). Leaves contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which lives inside tiny structures called chloroplasts. Chlorophyll acts like a solar panel, absorbing energy from sunlight. Using that energy, the plant breaks apart the water and carbon dioxide molecules and rearranges them. The oxygen is released through tiny openings in the leaves called stomata. Normally we can’t see this, but underwater the oxygen forms visible bubbles - so you’re actually watching the result of sunlight powering life on Earth. A simple experiment that shows how the sun helps plants make the oxygen we breathe ☀️✨ More Sun Science is coming in our little series, so follow along @funplayjoy4kids! #SunScience#Photosynthesis#STEMForKids#scienceisfun #HandsOnLearning

Be sure to check out for our Waste Free Home Guide available now🌎💚 Subscribe for 25% off! Repost • @sarah.robertson.barnes Leaf decor? For autumn? Groundbreaking 😆🍂 In the fall, I enjoy slowly perusing the forest floor for gems far more than driving around looking at the foliage change. After my walk each morning, I put what I have collected in between the pages of books to press until I decide what to do with them. This year I found that I was out of beeswax (to dip the leaves in) but still had the remnants of a long forgotten roll of wax paper. Note that wax paper is NOT compostable! I will be saving the used sheets for another upcoming craft and the leaves will end up in the fireplace. Not quite eco, but using what I already have. What is your favourite kind of leaf? Mine is all the variations of colour in a maple leaf 🍁 #nowasteliving #goingzerowaste #zerowastelife #wastefree #ditchplastic #zerowasteliving #zerowastehome #lessplastic #lifewithoutplastic #zerowastejourney #lowwasteliving #wastefreeliving #ecofriendlyliving #wasteless #reducewaste #reducereuserecycle #thereisnoplanetb #noplanetb #savetheplanet #sustainablelifestyle #lowimpactmovement #sustainabilitymatters #zerowastecommunity #livesustainably #minimalwaste #reduceplasticwaste #earthfriendly #consciousconsumer #goinggreen #wastefreeplanet

I kept a leaf alive with my thoughts for 2 months. But I’m still skeptical. Are you? 🌱 We took 2 leaves, put one on my bedside (and mentally talked to it every morning to give it the will to live), and we put the other in the living room (we didn’t talk to it at all or pay any attention to it). I was skeptical this actually works, but it’s been almost two months and the leaf we’ve been talking to is still alive. But I want to know if this really works. So…I’m taking two new leaves and putting them both in the living room - the space where the other leaf was neglected and died. This way, the conditions will be more fair and we’ll have a better understanding if this actually works or not. This has been done before successfully, the researcher kept the leaf alive for 2 months. This is a brief story about the researcher himself!👇🏼 🌱 “How does one define creativity? What is a creative person?” These are the questions Marcel Vogel, a research scientist, found himself asking. One day he came across an article titled, “Do Plants Have Emotions?” He began deeply considering this question in relation to creativity, and challenged his students to participate in various experiments to see if plants really did have emotion. The students put a lie detector test onto plant leaves to see what changes would occur, and although Vogel had success in seeing changes, his students did not. So he turned to Vivan Wiley, a spiritually gifted friend, and she suggested that to find out if plants have emotion, they each take two leaves…talk to one and leave the other…to see how the leaves would react. When they found that the leaf they talked to and ‘willed’ to live survived for 2 months, whereas the one they paid no attention to died in 2 weeks, he began performing other experiments to explore this more deeply. So…I want to try this, because although I am sceptical, who knows what could happen. Apparently the power of the mind can keep a leaf green way past its time. #howtowithjessie #leaf #nature #experiment

🌿🍂🍁🍃Autumn is officially here, we love collecting leaves and creating coloured leaf rubbings. What a game changer with these amazing tuff tray sized paper pads! Had to share from @earlyyearsresources - Leaf rubbing art. 🍁🍂 Go on a scavenger hunt and find different shaped leaves, then use wax crayons to gently rub over the leaves, revealing their intricate patterns and veins on the paper. And if the big kids want one too, you’ll probably make another 🍁☺️ My thoughtful sister collected, pressed, and travelled across an ocean with a bounty of fallen leaves in her suitcase 🫠 so that we (in Florida 🌴) could admire and have some fun with them 🧡 I think we will wax some and play around with a few other ideas, but I was dying to make a leaf crown like I saw @hulanka.kids share in a video earlier this month ✨ You punch a small hole in each leaf and weave the next stem through the hole before folding the leaf and repeating the process. Our leaves were collected over a week ago and getting a little crunchy to work with - I imagine the process goes a little smoother with fresher leaves! Have you made one of these before? They are so fun and beautiful 💫 For more nature craft inspiration, comment FALL below and I will send you a list of ideas that I love 🍂 #naturecrafts #fallcrafts #waldorfinspired
