This video demonstrates a surprising and efficient way to use a leaf rake for cleanup. The person in the video shows the typical way of raking leaves, and then reveals that the rake head can be flipped over and used like a large shovel or scoop. By using the broad, smooth back of the rake head, they are able to quickly and easily scoop up a large pile of leaves and dump them into a trash bin, saving the effort of bending over or using separate leaf scoops. The text caption, "You're telling me for 40 years!", highlights the unexpected nature of this simple trick for picking up leaves.

3 Ways to Use Leaves in the Garden ππͺ± Β For me, leaves are such a valued garden resource that add so much fertility to the vegetable garden, and best of all they are free and readily available! πππ The first way I use them is as a mulch on garden beds or pots, so we can mimic the natural mulching processes that occur to create a healthy forest floor. Leaves help to keep the soil covered, suppress weeds, retain soil moisture and boost fertility as they break down. π Leaves can also be shredded to allow more air and water to get through to soil and plants and to speed up decomposition. Or alternatively, instead of raking them off the lawn, mow them in, the lawn will thank you for it. π±π Β The second way I use them is by making leaf mould. Itβs so easy to make, as they can just be left in a pile, bagged up, or put into an empty compost bin to break down. ποΈπ I Keep them damp to speed up the process, and as well as improving the structure and water retention of soils, leaf mould attracts and feeds soil organisms and fungi that boost soil health. Itβs also a great addition a potting mix. πͺ±πͺ΄ Β The third way I use them is as an addition to the compost pile, another really quick and easy way to utilise the abundance of fallen autumn leaves. Leaves are a great brown (or carbon rich) material to combine with fresher green (or nitrogen rich) materials, attracting lots of beneficial fungi to the compost pile. π±π Β I store them nearby and add a layer in between green materials when I have them. This helps to create a rich and healthy compost that I add to my beds. Itβs important to leave plenty of leaves under trees or in woodlands as they are enriching the soil and acting as natural habitat for insects. π³ππ So try collecting from paved areas, just beware of trash and pollutants, or pick up bagged leaves others are throwing away. πππ»π So how are you using leaves in your garden? ππ #compost #autumngarden #gardeningtips #gardening #soilhealth

Donβt forget! π Next week is the final week for leaf raking to take advantage of our curbside pickup. Please have your leaves out by Monday, December 9, at 6:30 am and our collection trucks will be making their last pass. After that date, you can still bag your leaves for the regular Friday yard waste collection, or bring them to the Service and Engineering Department in the yard waste drop off. π #LeafCollection

You were never supposed to rake your leaves!! π ππππAs a child, my mother used to take our fallen leaves and actually spread them across the yard. She said it made good compost. She never threw away the leaves. π π Iβm very thankful that I had parents who taught me lots of things when it came to permaculture culture and living of the land..π³π±πͺΆπͺΆπͺΆ#Newconsciousworld #homestead #Growfoodnotlawns #leaves #compost #fall #saveleaves #sustainable #sustainability #foodforest #permaculture #foodforests #food #growfood @newconsciousworld
