Born on March 11, 1955, in Williamsburg, Virginia, he joined the group in 1982, replacing Lew DeWitt, and quickly became an integral part of their smooth harmonies and heartfelt sound. Fortune not only sang tenor but also wrote several of the Statlers’ later hits, including the timeless “Elizabeth,” “Too Much on My Heart,” and “My Only Love.” After the Statler Brothers retired in 2002, Jimmy launched a successful solo career focused on gospel and inspirational country music. I've mentioned this before but it takes a lot for me to dig anything country, this is another one of those few exceptions haha (The Statler Brothers - “Christmas Eve” [Kodia's Theme]/full music video airing on MTV2 in 2000 - video was released in 1985) 🎄 This one is most certainly a deep cut when it comes to Christmas songs, and even as far as country goes this is also a deep cut when it comes to that genre as well, I feel. I'm not the biggest country buff in the world so I don't know how true that is but I'm just going to assume that's the case lol Consisting of Harold Reid (bass) Phil Balsley (baritone), Lew DeWitt (tenor, original member) and Jimmy Fortune (he would end up replacing Lew Dewitt in 1982), they formed in the late '50s in Stauntom, Virginia and are mostly known for family themed songs with strong country harmonies! Despite the name, they weren’t actually brothers - the group took its name from the Statler Hotel where they once performed. That being said, let's talk a little bit about this Christmas song: Originally releasing in 1985 as part of their Christmas album titled “Christmas Present”, The song is told from the perspective of a dog named Kodia, who observes Christmas Eve through loyal, loving eyes and rather than focusing on presents or festivities, the song centers on quiet family moments and gratitude for home and companionship! Much of the track is spoken narration, a style that was pretty much the band's MO used to tell emotional, slice-of-life stories. In my opinion, I think this one is remembered for how effectively it captures Christmas through everyday warmth rather than spectacle. It's a really cozy song with a very cozy video to fit!
