Chenpi Ripe Liu Bao from @iteaworld 🍵 A few things I learned with this one — Liu Bao is a Chinese dark tea (hei cha) from Wuzhou in Guangxi, and chenpi is aged tangerine peel, traditionally from Xinhui. The two have been paired for generations because the chenpi softens Liu Bao's deep, earthy character and adds a brighter citrus layer. This was also my first time trying a compressed tea, and I'll definitely be reaching for more. The taste is smooth, and it gets bolder with each steeping — which is part of what makes a post-fermented tea like this so interesting. More flavors come out the longer you work with it. The earthiness was pleasant, not off-putting (a real compliment if you've ever had a dark tea that wasn't quite for you). I didn't pick up the tangerine notes right away, but slight citrus started showing up after a few steeps. If you've been curious about Chinese dark tea or compressed tea but weren't sure where to start, this is an easy yes from me. The chenpi makes it especially approachable — softer than a straight Liu Bao or ripe pu-erh would be on a first try.
