Read about this hidden gem in Ghent Belgium here👇 Hidden along the busy Veldstraat shopping street in Ghent stands the elegant city palace known as the Hôtel d’Hane-Steenhuyse, once the residence of the French king Louis XVIII during his exile in 1815. Originally a noble townhouse owned by the influential d’Hane family, the building was transformed in the 18th century into a luxurious aristocratic palace with refined salons, grand staircases and richly decorated interiors meant to host elite guests. Its historical importance comes from the moment when Louis XVIII fled from Napoleon and set up his temporary court here, turning a quiet Ghent residence into a place of European political intrigue. One famous anecdote says he dined in a salon with the windows open so citizens could see him eat, proving he was healthy and still in control. What makes the palace especially unique today is the contrast: a former royal refuge and noble residence hidden in plain sight between modern shops, preserving a rare glimpse of 18th-century aristocratic life in the heart of a lively commercial street. #belgium #travel #ghent #HiddenGems #france
