One of the questions I get asked most is how to get a solid print on lino or wood. There’s no one-size-fits-all answe as it’s usually a combination of things. But here are a few tips to help you troubleshoot: 1. Use enough ink. No too little and not too much. 2. Use enough pressure. A press gives more even results than hand burnishing. 3. The right kind of paper. Smooth and lightweight papers are easier to print on, especially by hand. 4. Sand your lino lightly to smooth out the surface and help the ink stick better. 5. Use high-pigment inks. In my experience, it doesn’t really matter whether it’s water or oil-based. 6. Dampen the paper if it’s thick or textured. 7. Use a small brush to touch up tiny spots, then blot with newsprint to remove any excess ink. Let me know if you have questions about any specific step, and I'll try to answer them in the comments!

This class “Sharpen up on Lino” is an in depth entry point to relief printmaking, and a great way to reframe your approach to positive and negative space in your existing art practice. The class will begin with an abstract exercise to get acquainted with the tools & techniques before carving out a design of your choosing.
