Day 068 | The Linux Interview Question that fails 90% of candidates. Imagine this: You’re in a high-pressure interview. The recruiter says: "A production server is at 100% disk usage. You delete a massive log file to save the day... but the space doesn't free up. Why?" If you don't know the answer, you're missing a core concept of Linux Internals. SAVE THIS 🚩 for your next SRE or DevOps interview! The Science Behind It: In Linux, a file is only truly removed from the disk when: The file name is unlinked (you ran rm). Crucially: No running process has an open file descriptor (FD) pointing to it. If your Nginx or Java app is still holding that file open, the disk space remains "reserved" even though you can't see the file in ls. How to solve it like a Pro: ✅ Find the Culprit: Run sudo lsof +L1. This shows all open files that have been unlinked from the file system but are still held by a process. ✅ The Immediate Fix: Restart the service identified by the PID. This forces the process to release the file descriptor and frees the space. ✅ The "Senior" Way: Don't rm active log files. Use truncation: cat /dev/null > /var/log/heavy_file.log. This clears the content while keeping the file descriptor intact. 🚀 CRACK THE SYSTEM. I’m breaking down the "hidden" logic of Linux and DevOps so you can walk into your next interview with total confidence. Linux is not a freaking OS.😲😱 Well, I have a lot of substantial statements to support that. When someone comes up and says “I am running Linux OS in my system”, it usually means they are using Linux + GNU. The Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Redhat, etc are actually Linux +GNU distributions. Linux is basically a kernel that acts as an interface between hardware and software components. One great example to prove Linux is not an OS would be “Android OS running Linux as its kernel”. Similarly, most smart devices like smart watches use Linux as their kernel. #linux #ubuntu #os #computerscience
