Korean security researcher Hyunwoo Kim chained two kernel bugs, one in IPsec (since 2017) and one in RxRPC (added 2023), to cover every major Linux distribution. CVE-2026-31431, commonly referred to as “Copy Fail,” is a high-severity Linux kernel vulnerability that allows local privilege escalation. The flaw exists in the algif_aead component of the AF_ALG cryptographic interface, where improper memory handling during cryptographic operations can be exploited by a low-privileged attacker to gain root access. The vulnerability affects several major Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE, and Amazon Linux, along with cloud and containerized environments such as Kubernetes. Due to its reliability and stealthy nature, the vulnerability has drawn significant attention from cybersecurity researchers and vendors. Security experts reported that attackers can exploit the flaw entirely in memory, making detection difficult because it leaves little to no forensic evidence on disk. The vulnerability received a CVSS score of 7.8 and was later added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog after reports of active exploitation in the wild. Administrators and organizations are strongly encouraged to update their Linux kernels immediately or temporarily disable the affected algif_aead module until official security patches are applied. Time to Patch ur kernel An exploit has been published for a local privilege escalation vulnerability dubbed “Copy Fail” that impacts Linux kernels released since 2017, allowing an unprivileged local attacker to gain root permissions. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-31431 and was discovered by the offensive security company Theori, using its AI-driven pentesting platform Xint Code after scaning the Linux crypto/ sybsystem for about an hour. Theori reported the finding to the Linux kernel security team on March 23, and patches became available within a week. Technical details and a proof-of-concept exploit for the flaw emerged publicly yesterday.
