Lisburn is a city in Northern Ireland. The town was originally known as Lisnagarvy (also spelt Lisnagarvey or Lisnagarvagh) after the townland in which it formed. This is derived from Irish Lios na gCearrbhach 'ringfort of the gamesters/gamblers'. Lisburn originated as a fort north of modern-day Wallace Park. The lands were granted to a Welsh nobleman in 1609 who began construction of the town. Charles I granted a charter for a weekly market in 1628, which still takes place today every Tuesday. Lisburn is the birthplace of Ireland's linen industry. Huguenot refugees from France brought over advanced techniques that helped build the industry. The section of the Lagan Canal that connected Lisburn to Belfast began contruction in 1759, and would further boost the town's industrial growth. In 1914 Lisburn Cathedral was destroyed by a bomb attack. The attack was carried out by the suffragettes (I bet you were expecting me to say the IRA). The Belfast blitz during WW2 had a huge affect on Lisburn, with the town forced to host many evacutees. By 1951, the population was 15,000, but was steadily growing. Lisburn was granted city status in 2002 by HM Queen Elizabeth II, as part of her golden jubilee celebrations. Notable people include politician David Trimble and boxer James Tennyson.
