✨ Don’t be afraid of finish filing ✨ When possible, I remove at least 1mm from the free edge at the end of a service — and here’s why 👇 🤍 Strength By filing that tiny amount, we remove the thinnest and weakest part of the natural nail. Using a specific technique and angle, I bevel the natural nail slightly so the hard gel/builder gel can extend just beyond it. This helps strengthen the free edge and significantly reduces the chances of chipping or breaking. 🤍 Aesthetics That super crisp, clean free edge? STOP using these on natural nails 💅🏾 ✨ In my gentle prep era ✨ Since switching brands, I’ve completely changed how I prep — and honestly, for the better. At this point i don't even use primers and thats ok because it works for my clients, its not always needed in my opinion Looking back at using 180 grit files or 180 grit sanding bands on natural nails, now gives me the shivers. Jeez, sometimes I even reached for 150 grit in the hopes that retention would be better. What was I thinking 😩 240 grit is more than enough Gentle prep with 240 grit helps protect the nail’s upper layers — the chemical-resistant layer that plays a huge role in preventing allergies, bacteria, and fungal issues. Using 180 grit or lower increases the risk of over-filing and exposing the softer layers of the nail. That can lead to lifting, poor retention, sensitivity, allergies, and long-term nail damage. ✨Why I chose soft builder gel instead of hard gel for this set This nail had good natural architecture and short length, so a rigid file off system was not necessary. ✨Soft builder is ideal here because it provides structured support with flexibility, allowing the overlay to remain thin and allowing the nail to flex slightly underneath. When would I switch to hard gel? ✨When I need a more rigid structure, whether for a weak highly flexible nail, even if short, or for added length, even if the natural nail is healthy. Understanding when to use and when not to use hard gel is essential. In my opinion every professional should be confident working with both systems. Here’s the rule: Stop using a one size fits all technique for every client. Gel overlays are not meant to be applied the exact same way on every nail. Different nail beds require different application. Different lengths require different apex placement. Different lifestyles require different reinforcement. When I was struggling, I was copying application. When I became fully booked, I started customizing structure. Pretty is not the goal. Longevity is. Why is your nail tech filing underneath the nail? When we work with hard gel, the structure is carefully built with a specific balance and apex. If the natural nail starts growing past that structure from underneath, it creates pressure at the free edge. Over time, that pressure can: • cause lifting from the tip • weaken the stress area • disrupt the balance of the architecture By gently removing a small part of the natural free edge from underneath, we maintain the correct structure and prevent separation. It’s a small detail — but it protects retention, strength, and long-term wear.
