This week we’ve been sharing about our live fire training. Here is a glimpse into part of this training: a look into our flashover chamber! In this training exercise, recruits were able to observe and learn about smoke and fire conditions, focusing on those that can result in a dangerous flashover event. Being able to recognize flashover conditions is an important firefighting skill. The compatibility between extinguishing agents (such as water) and the materials being stored is a critical safety factor. This must be carefully considered during both the design of fire suppression systems and actual firefighting operations. In the example shown, the fire involves magnesium, which is a highly reactive metal. Attempting to extinguish a magnesium fire with water can lead to a violent reaction. Magnesium breaks down the water molecules, releasing hydrogen gas and heat, which can cause an explosive release of energy. Additionally, when compounds like magnesium phosphide react with water, they release phosphine gas, which is both flammable and toxic. This is why it is essential to use the correct extinguishing agents for different types of materials. For metal fires, always use Class D fire extinguishers, which are specifically designed for combustible metals. In some cases, firefighters may use dry sand to smother the flames and cut off the oxygen supply. Always plan according to the specific fire risks involved.

All in, all day. #Academy59 Week 1 started off with a bang.💥Recruits dove into the deep end of physical training with the intense ‘tower workout.’ This timed circuit involves completing three laps through our training tower with numerous stair climbs, multiple sets of pull-ups, spam balls, wall balls, hose pulls, and other exercises.
