Our loft insulation was damp & wasn’t fit for purpose but to remove it I needed overalls, goggles and an FFP3 mask to handle the glass mineral wool I picked these up from @bandq_uk but found a more sturdy set of overalls the second time from @amazonuk Once the loft was empty the house was freezing and we needed to put the new stuff in. We got suited up again and bought the eco rolls in 100mm and 170mm from @knaufinsulationuk - again we got this from @bandq_uk as they had the best deal at the time and free delivery. Shop around! Lofts can be a minefield to navigate so I only put weight across joists and manoeuvred carefully as not to go through the plasterboards. Works best if you have a couple of small, sturdy boards that you lay across joists, perch your bum/knees on and use these the move around the loft. I found out in the UK the recommended minimum thickness to put down is 270mm: but you could go up to 500mm for maximum insulation; and typically you start with a 100mm base roll between the joists. The rolls come partially perforated at 400 or 600mm width. We pulled it apart at 600 but its easily cut to size with a Stanley blade or bread knife too. When laying we made sure not to cover or push it into the eaves as that interferes with airflow but we did add some to the gable ends to stop drafts. Then we rolled out the 170mm rolls perpendicular to the joists - this helps to trap the air and keep the house warmer and any electrical wires were always laid on top of the insulation. If you have spotlights you also need to cover those with appropriate spotlight covers for insulation. We have a foldable loft hatch so improvised with some insulation inside of plastic bags stapled on top. Finally we staggered roofing felt lap vents to increase air circulation and reduce risk of condensation up there. It wasn’t a pretty job, it was genuinely back-breaking and took us about 8 hours to lay the insulation but we noticed a difference in the warmth of the house immediately so it was undeniably worth it. Overall we spent about £500 and hopefully saved a lot doing it ourselves. What do you think? Would you try this? Follow for more DIY.
