In Verilog, the keywords wire and reg (or the more modern SystemVerilog logic type, which combines their features) define how signals are assigned and how they behave in simulation and synthesis. The fundamental difference lies in their ability to store a value and the type of assignment statement used to drive them. wire (Net Data Type) A wire represents a physical interconnection between hardware elements, much like a physical electrical wire or net on a circuit board. No Storage: A wire does not store a value; it simply passes a value from a driver to a receiver. Its value is continuously driven by something else. Assignment: It can only be assigned a value using a assign statement (continuous assignment) or by the output port of a module instance. Usage: It is typically used for modeling combinational logic (where outputs change instantaneously with inputs) and for connecting different modules or components. Default: If you declare a signal without specifying wire or reg, it defaults to a wire. reg (Variable Data Type) The term reg is short for register, but it's a general-purpose variable data type in Verilog that represents a storage element. Storage: A reg can store a value and retains that value until it is explicitly updated by a new assignment. This behavior is why it's ideal for modeling memory. Assignment: It can only be assigned a value within procedural blocks (i.e., always, initial, task, or function blocks). Usage: For sequential logic (like flip-flops and latches), the reg is assigned within an always @(posedge clk) block. For more complex combinational logic (using if-else or case statements), the reg is assigned within an always @(*) block.
