The Prisoner’s Dilemma is one of the most famous thought experiments in the world, and it bridges psychology, mathematics, and philosophy. It goes like this: imagine that you and I are caught for a crime that the police don’t have much evidence for, and so they give me an offer. If I confess and admit everything, then I will walk free. But you will get ten years in prison. And they give you the same deal too. But if both of us betray the other person, then we both get five years in prison. Or if we both stay quiet and give nothing away, well, the police have little to go on, and we only get six months for something minor. So, what would you do? Traditional game theory says that the best and dominant strategy is to betray, because no matter what the other person does, this maximises the chances of you getting a good personal outcome. But the Prisoner’s Dilemma is interesting because it also says that if we trust each other, and are willing to take a personal risk, then we can all be better off individually. And so much of society functions because we trust that other people are law-abiding, honest, and good people. We are all better off when we trust each other. The Prisoner’s Dilemma shows us that it isn’t just selfish or evil people that are the problem, but our fear of there being evil and selfish people. Trust is one of the most important elements of being human, and without trust, society cannot function.

Logical fallacies are deceptive or false arguments that may seem convincing but are actually flawed. They are errors in reasoning that lead to invalid conclusions. These fallacies can be unintentional, due to poor reasoning, or intentional, in an attempt to manipulate others. Understanding logical fallacies is useful because they can be deceptive, and being able to spot them in your own argumentation and that of others is important for critical thinking and constructing sound arguments. By recognizing logical fallacies, we can avoid being misled by unsound reasoning and can construct more persuasive and valid arguments. Humans hate not knowing things. We like definite answers and the comfort blanket of reassuring certainty. So, when we’re faced with not knowing, we either spend a great deal of effort trying to find out or we revert to some #bias This is known as the appeal to #ignorance Let’s say you read a story about a suspected criminal with a suitably surly, over-lit mugshot: “Oliver, 28, has been arrested on two counts of grievous bodily harm.” The definition of “suspected” is that we *do not know* if they’re guilty or not. And yet, in your mind, you will likely have concluded their innocence or guilt. Sometimes, this is just plain bias, but at other times, it’s the “appeal to ignorance” at play. “Oh, they’ve got no alibi; they must be #guilty ,” we might say. It’s a #fallacy because if we genuinely don’t know something, then there’s no telling if it’s this or that. So, if someone says, “You can’t disprove that #aliens exist, so they must!” or “Oh, they didn’t call me back, so I can’t have gotten the job,” then they’re guilty of an appeal to ignorance. It’s all to do with the burden of proof. It’s generally agreed in #philosophy that those who are making a positive assertion — those who say, “This thing exists” — are obliged to provide the proof for that thing. Yes, I cannot disprove invisible fairies in my garden, but neither can I disprove pixies, goblins, #angels , Jinn, or inter-dimensional nanobots, either. The mind abhors a vacuum, and so when we don’t have proof, we fall back on biases that we carry with us all the time.
