Long Division with Remainders as Decimals

Long Division with Remainders as Decimals Children may be asked to express a remainder is in the form of a decimal. When you’re asked to express your remainder as a decimal, you first complete division as usual, until you get to the point you usually end at, where you have nothing else to bring down. Instead of stopping here, however, you are going to keep going with division. You will add a decimal point (.) after the last number given in the dividend, and you will also place a decimal point in the quotient after the number you have so far. After the decimal in the dividend, you will add a zero (0) and continue division. You will keep adding zeros until your subtraction step results in an answer of 0 as well. Notice that I added a decimal after the 6 in the dividend, as well as a decimal after the 5 in our quotient. Then, I started adding zeros to the dividend. This time, it only took us one added zero before our remainder was zero. I’ve also shown an example using short division too 👍 #maths #division #year5 #year6

Hey parents! Show this to your child if they are struggling with division. This method for division is more visual for those learners that have a difficult time following the sequential steps of long division. It’s fun, easy to count and it works! Have you seen or tried this before? 9,808

Top 3 danger points for long division ⚠️ 1) Keep everything lined up! Think of the numbers as sittting inside of columns, this helps to show which number needs to be carried down. Also make sure you keep the quotient in the correct column. 2) Find the largest multiple! When you subtract, if the difference is larger than your divisor, you made a mistake. Check the number that you multiplied by and try making it bigger. 3) Don’t forget the remainder! You haven’t completed the problem if you haven’t written the correct answer. If you have a remainder, don’t forget to include it. And now my pitch for Partial Quotients! This process probably feels easier to those of us who learned it when we were younger, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to new learners. Ok, I can follow the algorithm, but why do I subtract? Why should I carry this down? I find that if I understand WHY something is happening, it’s so much easier to for me to remember to do it. With Partial Quotients it makes sense why we subtract. The “carrying down” happens naturally through that subtraction! Compare a problem done with long division to one done with Partial Quotients and you will see that the process is the same! Long division is just the short hand version that was developed by mathematicians as a short cut (maybe? I don’t actually have evidence of this) - but Partial Quotients allows mathematical thinking to actually happen and develop. I didn’t know I felt this way, but the past few weeks I’ve come to really appreciate partial quotients. Feel free to come at me with your long division fandom. I’d love to hear your thoughts and dialogue about this! #division #fourthgrade #math #mathymama4thgrade

Here’s how it works! 👇 Today is Part 1 of Helpful Hints for teaching long division!! 💾Don’t forget to LIKE and SAVE this for later and FOLLOW for more fun math hacks and resources! ➕➗➖✖️ ⭐️When dividing with multi-digit divisors, start with a cheat sheet and create multiples of the divisor to help with faster division and less chance of error! ⭐️When creating the chart, treat each column as its own individual multiplication problem! In the example above, I made groups of 26 by breaking apart the 20 and the 6. I listed the multiples of 20 then the multiples of 6 then added them together! ⭐️ Once all the multiples of my divisor are listed, I’ll be able to use them to complete my box method or standard algorithm for long division. ⭐️ Lots of kids can list their multiples of 26 without having to use the distributive method. I would suggest that they list those out before they start dividing either way!! ❤️❤️ Do you have any favorite division strategy? Long division may be a more efficient method but it’s not particularly intuitive for less experienced students, so it’s no wonder teachers often resort to memory techniques, but these can lead to more problems. Multiply what? Subtract what? 🫠 Without understanding the procedure, we’re left with so many opportunities for things to go wrong. It’s far better to spend time with methods that make intuitive sense, that require no memorising, just an understanding of the concept of division itself as equal grouping or equal sharing. Let me know if you found this method helpful 🥰. 👉 If you need to build a solid foundation in division, check out our brand new division ebook. It’s fun, fully illustrated, and easy-to-understand, with loads of guided examples and practice questions. No jargon, nothing to memorise, just simple ideas that make sense.
