Just three kilometres east of town stands Lokanath Weavers, established in 1955, among the oldest cooperatives in this handloom heartland. Its large, sunlit building carries the quiet authority of decades. Step inside, and the air trembles with the gentle click of looms, each beat steady and reassuring, like a promise kept. Lokanath weavers was born in the great cooperative movement that shaped Kannur’s identity. Here, weaving was not merely work. It was dignity shared. Cooperatives ensured that the weaver stood tall, not hidden behind commerce but celebrated within it. These fabrics travelled far, but their soul remained rooted in these rooms. Visitors are welcome to walk through, to witness creation without ornament. There is a small shop, modest and proud, displaying the labour of many careful hands. Every towel, every length of cloth carries hours of attention. The sales pitch, when it comes, feels less like persuasion and more like an invitation to belong. At the centre of this living legacy is Vinod Kumar, the secretary and its most passionate voice. He speaks with conviction, but also with responsibility. His team of 30 weavers and artisans are not just employees. They are custodians. In an age where handmade yields to machine-made and skills quietly disappear, they choose to stay, to practice, to preserve. There is pride here, but also tenderness. They know what could be lost. Yet every morning, the doors open. The looms begin again. And in that familiar rhythm, Kannur reminds itself who it is. At the Mehta Silk Museum in Varanasi, we learn about the tradition of silk weaving from owner Ashish Mehta. All of the silks here are hand woven on manual looms — some of them hundreds of years old.
