Here’s a simple trick to help kids conquer this common challenge! ✨ Start by teaching them the alphabet order, emphasizing the position of ‘b’ and ‘d’. ✍️ Then, have them write a ‘c’ and draw a line down from the curve, magically transforming it into a ‘D’! White people, we need to be honest about what just happened. The White House’s Black History Month statement wasn’t a celebration—it was an insult. Lowercase “b” for Black people? A roll call of Black conservatives who uphold white supremacy? And all this while the government pulls back institutional support for Black history? This isn’t honoring Black history; it’s erasing it in real-time while throwing us a distraction. As Ella Baker said, “We who believe in freedom cannot rest.” That applies to us, too. If we care about justice, we can’t just shake our heads and move on. We have to push back—against these empty gestures, against the erasure of real Black history, and against a system that wants us to feel just informed enough to stay passive. ❋ Learning the difference between b and d can be really tricky! ❋ Here are some fun tricks that we use to help our students memorize them! 1. ‘b’ has a belly, ‘d’ has a diaper! Draw a stick figure that is facing the right. Draw ‘b’ with a big belly and a belly button! Then draw ‘d’ with a big diaper! 2. Your left hand makes a ‘b’ and your right hand makes a ‘d.’ If your child knows left and right, this is a great way to physically make a visual representation of both letters! 3. ‘b’ fits inside of uppercase ‘B’. ‘d’ does not fit inside of uppercase ‘D’. This trick helps to both memorize the difference between the lowercase letters and to associate each one with its uppercase form! ❋ Each child will have a different trick that helps them, so show them each one! ❋ Which one is your favorite?
