Lp supercell in Oklahoma 👀 A low-precipitation (LP) supercell is a special type of supercell thunderstorm that forms in relatively dry atmospheric conditions and produces only a small amount of rain. Supercells in general are powerful, long-lasting thunderstorms characterized by a rotating updraft called a mesocyclone, which allows them to persist for hours and often generate severe weather such as large hail, strong winds, and sometimes tornadoes. An LP supercell differs from other types because it contains very little visible precipitation. Instead of heavy rain, it typically produces only isolated but often very large hailstones. This happens because the dry environment limits the number of raindrops in the storm, allowing small supercooled water droplets to attach to growing hailstones, making them larger over time. Visually, LP supercells are often easier to recognize than other supercells because their structure is not hidden by rain. They usually appear slim, well-defined, and sometimes bell-shaped, with a clearly visible rotating updraft. These storms are often found in regions with lower humidity, such as semi-arid plains. Although they produce less rain, LP supercells can still be dangerous. They are capable of producing large hail and occasionally tornadoes, and their clear structure can make them especially striking to observe. Overall, an LP supercell is a drier, more visually distinct version of a supercell thunderstorm, combining strong rotation with minimal precipitation. This supercell was one of two we documented on this early Spring storm chase with several tornadoes documented from Woodward to Sharon, OK. This archive chase is one of our classics, and one I need to revisit sometime soon with a more fleshed out video. Uma pequena linha de instabilidades se aproximando do leste e um acentuado cisalhamento do vento entre os baixos e os médios gerou na dianteira um bonito mesociclone na tarde de ontem, 03 de janeiro de 2025. É o primeiro evento de supercélula da temporada e do ano. Desde 2019 que não falta, no mínimo, uma vez, a formação de supercélula. Esse foi do tipo mais comum por aqui: baixa precipitação (LP supercell). Note a rotação da nuvem até os médios níveis. Em alguns momentos chegou a formar uma estria. O mesociclone passou bem em cima de mim e seguiu para o oeste, até se dissipar. A chuva associada estacionou a leste e só veio um sereno. Ventava bastante de nordeste antes, o que ajudou a acentuar mais ainda o cisalhamento. Na passagem do mesociclone, o vento mudou de leste, voltando a ficar de nordeste novamente após a passagem. O vento aumentou gradualmente de velocidade à medida que o mesociclone se aproximou, ficando bem forte na chegada.
