Might as well create a little light amidst all this icy darkness 🧊🧊🧊😡. With the sub-zero temps this week here, it’s a perfect time to make ice luminaries! Warm up the spirits of passersby! Here’s how—> ❄️✨❄️✨❄️ These are surprisingly easy to make. I tried a few different vessels and found that a 2 gallon bucket full of water left outside overnight did the trick. Temperature needs to be below freezing, obviously :) The top and outside areas of the bucket freeze first, and the bottom the slowest. So the next morning, just carefully dump the bucket upside down, pour the water out and voilà! Place a votive candle inside (I used battery-operated ones) and it will last as long as the freezing temps do! Tips: • I tried using a big pot but the inside knobs that hold the handles on were a hindrance in allowing the ice to slide out. • I tried making one in a glass vessel. Bad idea! Broken glass! Have you made these before? If so, let me know if you have any tips or ideas! Next time, I’m going to put some dried flowers and leaves into the water.

Neighbors gathered again at Lake Nokomis with paper and ice luminaries on Saturday, Jan. 31, to light up ICE OUT so that those flying in and out of the nearby international airport could view it. There was music, hotdogs and marshmallows, and a place for Minneapolis residents to come together, united after two shooting deaths by ICE agents just miles away earlier this month. Renee Good and Alex Pretti lived and worked in South Minneapolis, and were beloved in their community. Both were exercising their Constitutional rights to observe when they were shot multiple times and died on the street 2.5 weeks apart. Since, residents in Minneapolis have continued to gather in groups big and small, exercising their First Amendment rights: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.“ The editors of The Nation magazine are in the process of formally nominating the city of Minneapolis and its people for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. We first made these a few years ago, but I love this project too much not to reshare! 🧊✨❄️ Here’s how to make these frozen globe luminaries yourselves: Fill your balloons with water, but don’t fill them completely—leave some room for the ice to expand. Place the balloons outside or in the freezer and freeze them until there’s a solid outer layer of ice, but the inside remains liquid (usually about 4-6 hours). Once the outer layer is frozen, carefully pop the balloon and peel it away, leaving behind a beautiful ice globe with a hollow center. Now, you can easily place an LED light inside the hollow center of the globe for a soft, glowing effect. Arrange your frozen luminaries outside wherever you want a cozy, wintery touch! This method gives you the perfect balance—enough ice to hold its shape, but enough space inside for a light to shine beautifully. Simple wintery magic that I can’t wait for you to try! ❄️✨
