This lowers the melting point of the overlying mantle, creating magma that rises to form volcanoes. ✅Key Features Oceanic Trenches: Deep, V-shaped valleys on the seafloor, such as the Mariana Trench, which mark the point of descent. Volcanic Arcs: Chains of volcanoes on the overriding plate. Examples include the Andes Mountains (ocean-continent) and the Aleutian Islands (ocean-ocean). Wadati-Benioff Zone: A planar zone of earthquakes that follows the path of the subducting slab deep into the mantle (up to 700 km).
