While announcing a $31 million in penalties against the owners of Robert Fulton Terrace and Fordham Towers in the Bronx, Mayor Mamdani faced some backlash from tenants who felt they should be reimbursed for repairs they have had to make over the years. In addition to the penalties, the City also secured the appointment of an independent Chief Restructuring Officer as part of the court judgements, froze over $900,000 from the owners’ bank accounts, and negotiated to release those funds to the Chief Restructuring Officer to make sure critical repairs are completed for residents across nearly 500 apartments. 🗽 New York is learning the hard way… you can’t run a city on promises and vibes. Mayor Mamdani sold big affordability promises like universal child care and rent freezes, but still hasn’t figured out how to actually pay for them. Shocker. Now the city is staring at a $5.4 billion budget shortfall, and he’s threatening a 9.5% property tax hike. Even though… NYC’s budget is double Tokyo’s. Tokyo has twice the population, cleaner streets, better transit, lower crime, less homelessness, and stronger schools. Similar in scale. But Better results. While costing Half the money. Mamdani promised rent freezes — but now New Yorkers are facing rent increases instead. And they’re not happy. Research from MIT shows that when property taxes rise, landlords usually pass most of that cost straight to renters. So that 9.5% hike is not going to stay on paper — it’s going to show up in your rent. And NYC is already the most experienced city in the U.S: with average rent already around $4,000 to $4,300, that means hundreds more every year just to stay where you are. And it gets worse. Last month, Mamdani and Governor Hochul announced universal child care — only for the funding to immediately be blocked by the federal government. Because New York relies on nearly 75% of that funding which comes from the federal government. And the administration has frozen said funding due to broader efforts to crack down on alleged fraud in states like Minnesota and New York. The funding has now been stuck in courts ever since it was announced. So far, we’ve seen a lot of talking… a lot of branding… a lot of TikToks… And very little governing.
