What the fox? Big-eared, red-haired, long-legged, the maned wolf is unlike any other canid species—literally. With a very misleading name and appearance, maned wolves look like a red fox on stilts, but they’re actually not related to foxes or wolves at all. Hmm, now who would put peanut butter in my tree 🤔🥜🌳 Spoiler alert, our animal care staff did it. This encourages the maned wolf to investigate for what they’re smelling. They also love peanut butter on anything, even tree bark it appears. They do this naturally with most scents, and this is a great enrichment that encourages that instinct. Working with these maned wolves at @hemsleycc taught me a lot about antecedent arrangement. We positioned the pipe at what we thought was the right height, but watching them figure out how to get their foot through (while being reinforced for all attempts) was really amazing. The leg went through in the first training session!! Maned wolf pupdate: Brisa and Sheldon's four maned wolf pups have names! 🐺 The female pup is named Jaci (yah-see) after the goddess of the moon in Tupi/Guarani mythology. Caipora is the darkest male named for being the protector of animals in Tupi/Guarani mythology. One of the other males is named Cinza, which means gray, ash, or cinder in Portuguese as he was the pup born with the lighter coloration and fiery personality. The last male is named Urso, which means bear in Portuguese. If you're trying to see maned wolf pups Jaci, Caipora, Cinza, and Urso, the best time is later in the afternoon!
