Coka, now 24 months, lives in Japan. He has transitioned to solids with the adapted baby-led weaning approach and has become an amazing and independent eater! Coka’s parents have worked diligently with him by offering family foods, using food strips and teethers, partially exposed foods and by placing small food pieces in an ice cube tray to work on refining his pincer for self-feeding. They are also using responsive feeding methods with him. One of my favorite stories with Coka was when his mother was concerned that he wouldn’t try egg. We had Mom offer him a plate with two of his favorite foods along with a strip of egg, and we had mom just model eating her own egg strip on front of him without saying a word. While Coka ate the two other offered foods first, he then picked up the egg strip and ate it!!! It was so exciting to see that how just modeling without pressure was SO powerful. Babies with Down syndrome can become safe and independent eaters with an adapted baby-led weaning approach. It may take some time and require some guidance from a feeding therapist, but it is absolutely possible! Go Coka!
