🎥 'Totally Wired' by The Fall, filmed in New York (1981). For all of his complexities, Mark E Smith could be gloriously straightforward. ‘Totally Wired’ is one song whereby you don’t have to have been up for two nights in a bedsit for the meaning to suddenly click in a eureka moment that’s forgotten by sunrise. I need your help: I’ve listened to the last 20 seconds of this clip at least 100 times, and I still can’t figure out who Mark is referring to — who’s the actress wife? Who’s the guy he’s referring to? Who’s fluent in Manchurian accents? ⚡️ Mark E. He was identified as one of the leaders of post-punk, but Mark E. Smith – who died on this day seven years ago – was post-everything. The founder of the Fall defied conventions at every turn. His cut-and-paste lyrical collages showed contempt for the intellectual class, a sardonic fascination with post-industrial grime and Northern English existential wit. The Mancunian was an iconoclast, though he’d probably reject that tag. ‘Agent of confrontation’ is more apt. Smith: “Rock & roll isn’t even music really. It’s a mistreating of instruments to get feelings over.” A good number of band mates would say the quote applied to them. The Fall had more than 50 line-up changes and 60-some members over 31 studio albums. Collaborators came and went – sometimes because they ate salad or danced to ‘Smoke on the Water. Sometimes after a fistfight – as was the case during a notorious 1998 NYC show, when an on-stage melee led to the departure of longtime bassist Steve Hanley and Karl Burns. Mark E. Smith: “I was too soft with the band. I spoiled them to death!” Post-punk set out to reject the clichés and sensibilities that came before it, but Smith rejected everything on the road to one of music’s most prolific and compelling careers. Smith: “I do feel like an outsider, but I don’t lose any sleep over it.” For more stories like this, follow @ruffianbooks Video: “Eat Yourself Fitter” video, 1982. #thefall #markesmith #postpunk #postpunkmusic #punk #punkrock #garagerock #indiemusic #manchester #nickcave #thefallband #1980s #joydivision #thesmiths
