@chiefrichardcurrie In most countries in the world, their nation, their republic was formed by their indigenous people. In countries where that is not so, settlers came together with the indigenous people to create those nations. So our beloved Jamaica is attempting to create a republic, without coming together with the indigenous people. Many people have their opinions on who the Maroons are, thanks for your opinion but the point is, none of that is important now that we are at this monumental crossroads in the history of our time. What is important is that we come together now as a collective, first to comprehend what’s taking place, because the vision of the Maroon ancestors was unit amidst the struggle, a fight for freedom which engulfed the entire island to preserve for our family “Kindah”. All Jamaicans including the First Nation peoples (Maroons, Rasta, Taino whatever you want to call it) need to come together now to defend our rights, which includes our land rights, our right to natural spaces like the rivers, the beaches, to freely access and preserve our fresh natural spring water currently under threat from capitalistic driven external entities. #Accompong #Maroon #Government #indigenous #jamaica

Accompong Maroon government has been making every effort to diplomatically communicate with the government of Jamaica both prior and during the constitutional reform process to ensure that Jamaica resolves an age old issue regarding the “Maroon Question” since 1962 and indigenous Maroon land rights. The recent report by the government of Jamaica to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD stated that “there are no indigenous people in Jamaica, “ a statement that is not only false but also deeply disrespectful to the Accompong Maroons and other indigenous peoples on the island. The lack of meaningful dialogue and consultation with us, as outlined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, is a violation of our rights and a clear example of discrimination. We have a Treaty of Peace and Friendship with the British Crown that has been in force since 1738, and we have never been conquered or colonized. Our rights are enshrined in this treaty and Clause 4 of the Jamaican Constitution further affirms that this treaty remains in force under the laws of jamaica, yet we have been left out of the conversation when it comes to the future of our island and people. We are not defending the maroon treaty to be separate from our jamaican relatives or cause trouble between government to government relations. Accompong is defending the treaty because we see an unconscionable effort to remove the indigenous people and our culture from the political history of jamaica and to try to nullify Maroon authority under a republic jamaica. It also seeks to remove people, many labeled as squatters, from lands due to them based on the existence of this treaty (whether maroon or non maroon). Such is the power of 1738 treaty with the crown for the born and unborn.
