Martelé in scales and Kreutzer isn’t just an articulation exercise; it’s a study in control, stillness, and what Galamian called “correlation” in violin playing and practice. Before the bow stroke begins, everything must be organized. The left hand prepares first; finger placed, catch the string, and balance established. Only then does the bow engage. That tiny moment of stillness before the attack is where control lives. True martelé is not force — it is coordinated timing between both hands. Galamian emphasized correlation in violin: the hands do not operate independently. The left hand prepares the condition, the right hand delivers the articulation, and both release together. When that relationship is aligned, the sound feels focused at the front and free immediately after — almost as if the resonance happens “for free.” Work this slowly on open strings, then in scales, then in Kreutzer. Let the stillness define the clarity. If you try this, pay attention to one thing: Do you feel control before the stroke, or are you reacting after it begins?
