I’m no art expert, but stepping into the preview for Sotheby’s Late Preview felt a little surreal. Standing face to face with works by Francis Bacon, Tracey Emin, Banksy, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, pieces I’d mostly only seen in books, before they went under the hammer. A few days later the auction went live, bringing in around £131 million with every lot sold. London’s spring art market is clearly very much alive. But honestly, the best part was simply being able to slow down and spend time with the works and a night off from my usual. Sometimes you don’t need to be an expert to appreciate art, just curious enough to stop and look. I finally made it to the @studiomuseum in Harlem and seeing the Tom Lloyd exhibition in person was the highlight for me. The way he uses light, color, and movement is just mesmerizing. I was also excited to see works by Kerry James Marshall and Jean-Michel Basquiat up close. And learning about the history of the museum itself really impressed on me how important spaces like this are for preserving, celebrating, and nurturing Black artists.
