I’m officially starting a masters program in neuroscience in September 🙌🏼🙌🏼 it’s something I’ve grown extremely curious about and passionate for and I’m so stoked🎉🥳 I used to let myself be a victim to my thoughts until I realized I could control them, and by doing so, that I could change my life. While we don’t get to control life around us or the things that happen to us. We get to control ourselves. It’s easy to sit and dwell, to remain in a negative mindset, to complain, to focus on the hardships, what we’re not happy with, or to only pay attention to where we fall short. It’s beautiful and powerfully affective (and difficult at first) to intentionally think differently. To choose positivity and love, understanding, patience and kindness…with ourselves most of all. Start by simply paying attention to your thoughts. What type of things are you thinking about? Are they framed more positively or negatively? Then, when you notice yourself thinking in a way that doesn’t make you feel good, or isn’t how you want to be thinking… Take a deep breath and rephrase the thought that came to your mind. Building new neural pathways changes our behaviors, our habits, our outcomes, and our life. And, if after recognizing that you may think more negatively, yet don’t want to, yet still aren’t changing your thoughts… Ask yourself “Why do I think I don’t deserve to live the life that I want to live in the way I want to live it?” Something is holding you back, and it’s most likely yourself. So you’re getting ready to apply this cycle! Most people don’t realize this but the application cycle really starts earlier than the date that apps open. Here are the things that I would be doing✨right now✨ to make the application process a breeze and hopefully get an 🅰️ by this time next year: 1) Make sure you have letter writers lined up and ask them to have them submitted MUCH earlier than May. I had my LOR writers submit their letters to my interfolio in March/April. And when one of my letter writers ghosted me, I had time to ask another professor without making them feel rushed. 2. Work on your personal statement now. Truthfully I worked on mine the entire year before I applied because I would get moments of inspiration that I felt would help round out my PS. I also had access to faculty and advisors at my masters program who were all on the admissions committee at a top 30 med school. I started early so I could take advantage of their ability to help me with my personal statement and receive amazing advice on writing personal statements for medicine. By doing these two things prior to when apps officially opened in May, I had more time when I was filling out AMCAS/AACOMAS to work on writing solid activity descriptions and start prewriting answers to secondary questions.
