Because you wanted to make history #materialsengineering #materialscience #engineering How did I do? If you're into chemistry there's a good chance you'll like materials science and engineering. What should I cover next?

Engineer VS Maker : material selection 101 Selecting the right material for a part or project is an art unto itself. More than any other book I've seen, this book clearly explains and systematizes choosing materials. Thanks @laneymachinetech for the recommendation. This is gonna be one dog-eared tome. #prototyping #textbooktuesday #bookrecommendation #materials #materialsscience #makerculture

This torsional force induces diagonal tensile stresses across the entire peripheral zone. To effectively counteract these stresses, follow these 4 roles: 1. Strategically place longitudinal reinforcement along the entire perimeter of the beam. 2. Equip stirrups with a double hook for optimal effectiveness. 3. Securely anchor rebars from the slab in the beam, either through a double bend or a traditional one-piece design. 4. Design beams under torsion with a larger width due to high shear strength requirements. #structuralengineering #concretedesign #civil #construction #design

Geotextile reinforcement systems are widely used on steep mountain slopes where water runoff weakens soil structure and increases the risk of landslides and falling debris onto roadways. The system stabilizes the surface by holding loose soil in place while allowing water to drain through, reducing pressure buildup behind the slope. This improves load distribution, minimizes erosion, and protects nearby infrastructure. As a final stage, vegetation is often introduced so root systems can naturally strengthen the soil over time, creating long-term slope stability and safer driving conditions in high-risk terrain. #geotechnicalengineering #Geotextile #roadsafety #engineering #control

That “mud-like” material you’re seeing is abrasive slurry — a liquid loaded with microscopic metal or ceramic particles that can polish, shape, and smooth metal with insane precision. It’s basically sandpaper in fluid form, and engineers rely on it for jobs where normal grinding tools can’t reach. There are a few versions of this tech: • Lapping compound: thick slurry with abrasive grains for ultra-fine polishing. • Magnetic abrasive slurry: tiny magnetic metal particles align under a magnetic field to create a flexible “polishing brush.” • Abrasive flow media: a dense polymer putty pushed through tight spaces to smooth the inside of metal parts. Why liquid? Because it flows into places tools can’t — tiny channels, edges, corners, and internal surfaces. That’s how aerospace, medical, and automotive engineers get mirror-level finishes where accuracy matters. If you’ve ever seen mud shape metal… now you know the science behind it. 🔬⚙️ 💬 What other weird STEM materials do you want explained? 🔁 Remix this and add your perspective. 📌 Save this for your next engineering rabbit hole. #STEMfacts #EngineeringExplained #MaterialScience #STEMeducation #AbrasiveMachining #MFGtech #NanoTech #STEMcommunity

A machine forming a metal mesh, a process for creating expanded metal sheets. The metal is fed through a series of blades that simultaneously cut and stretch it, creating the diamond-shaped pattern. Expanded metal is a versatile material used in various applications, including security fencing, walkways, and architectural elements. The process involves slitting and stretching a solid metal sheet, resulting in a lightweight and strong mesh. #metal #mess #forming #process #heavymachinery.

Particleboard manufacturing is a reminder that not all innovation is digital. This process turns wood waste and resin into dense sheets by compressing the mix under extreme heat and pressures that can reach fifty atmospheres. With more than fifty six million cubic meters produced this year, it remains a core material for low cost furniture and construction around the world.
