Mount Moriah is a historic cemetery founded in 1855 that provided a community burial space welcoming diverse communities. Ownership abandonment left it extremely vulnerable and I’m heartbroken that it has been harmed in that state. They are alleging 100 skeletal remains have been removed from mausoleums that are now irreparably vandalized in order to resell them. Infants, children and nearly 200 year-old remains are among those stolen (and some now disassembled and altered) for profit. Cairo’s City of the Dead is a vast cemetery stretching for miles along the eastern edge of the city, originally built to house the tombs of Egypt’s elite. Mausoleums line the streets like residential blocks, complete with doors, courtyards, and rooms meant for the living to visit the dead. Over time, the boundaries between burial ground and neighborhood collapsed. The tombs did not stay empty. As Cairo’s population surged and housing became inaccessible for millions, families began moving into the mausoleums themselves. Entire households now live inside structures built for burial, sleeping beside stone sarcophagi and grave chambers. Electricity is often run illegally. Water access is limited or nonexistent. Some tombs are shared by multiple families, separated by hanging sheets or makeshift walls, with the remains of the dead still sealed into the floors or walls. Life inside the cemetery is shaped by constant exposure to decay and neglect. Children grow up playing between headstones and burial vaults. Livestock is kept among graves. In some cases, human remains have been disturbed or displaced to make space for daily living. The smell of dust, waste, and decomposition lingers in the narrow passages, especially in areas with poor sanitation and no waste removal. Authorities have alternated between ignoring the settlement and attempting forced removals. Demolition campaigns have destroyed sections of the cemetery to make way for highways and redevelopment projects, displacing families with little notice. Residents report losing homes built inside tombs without compensation, while others are left in place due to lack of alternatives. The City of the Dead spans several square miles, contains centuries old burial sites, and is home to tens of thousands of living residents. Families currently inhabit tombs, mausoleums, and crypt structures, while government redevelopment continues to dismantle parts of the cemetery.
