Daniel Wayenberg (1929-2019) in 1958 playing the coda of Chopin’s Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor, Op. 39. Written in 1838-39 between Mallorca and Paris, this is a very Lisztian scherzo with its devilish spirit in the virtuosic traits/octaves but also with its religious qualities in the chorale-like section in the middle: maybe something Chopin heard at the Valdemossa monastery. This interpretation is quite thrilling, but I can’t help but go back to two historical recordings: the 1924 Rachmaninoff recording (RCA) which was a revelation for me; the Simon Barere 1934-36 recording (HMV). The Érard piano Wayenberg plays on is particularly fitting for this most Lisztian scherzo: one knows that Liszt was particularly fond of the potent sound of the Érard developed for big concert halls compared to the more intimate sound of the Pleyel that Chopin preferred for the salons. But there is no doubt that this piece fits the Érard more: Chopin wrote the piece for one of his German students, Adolf Gutmann – a close friend of the Érards, he played in their Paris salon often – was one of the most robust pianists of the time. Those octaves were catered to his force. Another Chopin pupil, Wilhelm von Lenz, wrote that Gutmann was one of the rare interpreters who could perform the large chord in bar 6. Apparently, Gutmann could punch a hole in a table with his fist. In any case, he premiered the work in 1840 with much success. In his book on Chopin’s life, Liszt wrote the following regarding the Scherzi: « We meet with breathings of stifled rage, of suppressed anger, in many passages […]. depict a concentrated exasperation and despair, which are sometimes manifested in bitter irony, sometimes in intolerant hauteur.
