Whenever I’m stuck in the middle of learning something new, I have to remind myself of this video. The first couple days I attempted this, I was so far off target, I thought, “There’s no fucking way this is happening.” I was also about to leave for a full US tour and knew that if I screwed it up, everyone in my band would have a good reason to hate me. Over the course of that month, after watching the practice footage over and over, running the flip about 20x a day (until my knees were too swollen to continue), really assessing why it was important to me and talking the concept over w/ @gopro , I decided I needed to find a way. I hadn’t seen it done before and that has always been what has intrigued me most about any art. The night before my tour, I met up with @kevinstuff at 10pm we pulled it off in 3 takes. No falls, but I wasn’t happy with the drumming on the first 2. Since then, I have had to learn/practice at least 20 career skills I never thought would be necessary to my life and there is always a brief point where I sort of think, “Do I really have to learn this too?” But then I go back to this video and remind myself, I’ve been here, it was worth it, and this is just the next step. David Bowie has one of the greatest quotes in music history and it’s always resonated with me in these moments, “If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth.
