I’ve got to kind of rush over the process to keep the reel short but I might do a video soon showing more of the metal finishing process. The process as a whole goes like this: Panel prep is key, getting it to sit comfortably next to the adjacent panel without any clamps or introduced tension to hold it in place. Added tension is the largest reason for distortion in a panel that’s difficult to correct. The panel will always distort with welding but you can keep it to a minimum by taking the time to perfect the pieces before welding. The gap is another other important part of prep and I’ve explained the reasons behind this in earlier videos. I always take my time to carefully scribe and fine tune that cut line so that’s it’s even. Panel warp is caused from the shrink of the weld itself which is why it is important to only planish the weld itself when correcting distortion. Welding in one pass is 100% my favourite method of Tig welding sheet metal from personal experience. The panel will warp regardless, it’s what happens when heat is introduced to metal. Consistency is key and what I mean by that is a continuous and consitant weld creates consistant distortion. With an even amount of planishing the distortion will easily reverse itself to the shape the panel was beforehand. The corner and back piece is metal finished to maybe 90%.
