Casting directors aren’t just assessing the work. They’re assessing you, how you show up, how you listen, and whether they can trust you in the room. And that trust is built far faster than most actors realise. Here are three behaviours that consistently register as green flags: ✨ You arrive settled, not apologetic. You take a moment. You land in the space. You don’t rush to prove yourself. That calm tells casting you can handle pressure. ✨ You genuinely listen. Not “waiting for your line” listening... Real listening. You let the reader affect you before you respond. That responsiveness is far more compelling than any planned choice. ✨ You adapt without ego. A note, a redirect, a change and you stay open. No explaining. No justifying. That flexibility builds enormous trust. None of this is flashy. But it’s what makes casting feel safe with you. And safety is what turns a good audition into a memorable one. 💬 Which of these do you think matters most in the room? 🎭 Save this before your next audition. . . . #themeisnertechnique #actingcoach #actingteacher #actingtips #actingtraining

✨ Radiation. 🔥 Fire. 🧠 Real thought. 👂🏽Deep listening. Excellent advice for all actors and something I work on all the time in my coaching sessions. Have real thoughts. It seems obvious, right? But you’d be surprised how rare it is in performance. When there are active thoughts underneath the lines, the audience leans in. Watchable actors are thinking actors, not line readers. And of course listening. Deep listening with your whole body. When you truly take the attention off yourself, your responses are authentic and you become more grounded and present. That level of connection is compelling. Actors ask all the time how to access real emotion without pushing or faking it. The truth is that emotion does not respond well to pressure. You cannot command it. You have to invite it. Stanislavski talked about finding indirect paths to the emotional life, and that idea still holds. When an actor deeply understands the story, the conflict, and the given circumstances, something shifts. When you truly want something and there is resistance in the scene, the emotional response arrives on its own. It is not manufactured. It is a byproduct of pursuit. This is where solid acting training actually does its job. Another path I often use comes from Chekhov. Atmosphere, physical intention, and embodiment allow the actor to experience the scene rather than perform it. When the body is engaged, the mind quiets down, and emotion follows naturally. It feels lived in, not pushed. Personalization can also be useful when handled carefully. Recalling something from your own life can open a door, but only if you let go of control. You cannot decide what will come up. Sensory work helps here. Smell, sound, texture, and space gently coax emotion forward without forcing it. When emotion is chased, it becomes cliché. When it is approached indirectly, it becomes truthful. That is the work. That is the craft. Tom Draper Acting Coach #actingcoach #actingtraining #chekhovtechnique
