Where the name comes from and why the ten holes. There are some other suggestions as to where the name came from. Some say it’s a tribute to Dr Hans Zehnloch who invented the biscuits in 1930 at Cadburys and it’s a blend of Bourneville and Bonn, where he was from. But they are not a Cadbury’s biscuit and were invented much earlier. I think someone made this up as Zehnloch is German for ten holes. Others believe the name comes from beurre bon, meaning good butter but this doesn’t sound right either. I am on a little tripette at the moment and I wouldn’t be taking my role as biscuit ambassador seriously if I didn’t send a from our own correspondent report. So here we are. My brief stint in Sydney didn’t reveal as many artisan biscuits as I had hoped I got waylaid by the best lamington of my life @flourandstone they soak the sponge in pannacotta - its wild & delicious the day after & the day after you buy it! I bought some ginger bics from them too which was a good start. I had a very good look at every biscuit aisle I could and was enthralled by @arnottsbiscuits huge range. They seem old school in a good way and although I wasn’t going to sample them all I was there for the concepts…. On our travels up the new south wales coast we came across plenty of old style bakeries but their main staples are pies with varying degrees of biscuit thrown in. Then we were lucky enough to find ourselves in a gorgeous seaside town on the day of the farmers market where we met a baker who had a huge range of biscuits. Next we headed to Melbourne where the biscuit game is STRONG - I mean the bakery scene here is absolutely gasp worthy not enough hours for all the lamination here but so great to see & be near. Namewise there were some excellent contenders one of my favourites being Barnys Bliss for obvious reasons although I think he wouldn’t be particularly on board with this one & it is only just on the edge of what might be acceptable in biscuitworld. Next stop NZ where I am excited to be meeting a queen of biscuits @shemeansbiscuits 🍪
