Last year, the Ohio Senate passed and successfully overrode vetoes to enact major property tax reforms — preventing future substitute and emergency levies that raised taxes without a vote of the people, capping automatic millage growth tied to inflation, increasing the residential tax credit for homeowners, and empowering County Budget Commissions to rein in excessive collections. These reforms are projected to save Ohio taxpayers $2 billion over three years. We know more work remains. That’s why property tax relief continues to be a top priority. After this major jail break, the fact that the Sheriff’s office asked today for an additional $13M of your tax dollars (new money, separate from millage), but won’t increase its transparency on spending, plus they’re unwilling to tighten their belt on utilizing money from their “special fund” which goes to travel, conferences and other activities, gives me total assurance that Rep. Hughes and I made the right call in bringing in the state legislative auditor to investigate the sheriff’s expenditures. This is the most effective effort toward finding the right solutions. Have requested that this investigative audit be expeditiously done to get necessary information. In the meantime, a special response team is securing the jail that remains on lockdown. On Monday, the Atlanta City Council will consider the adoption of the City’s budget for Fiscal Year 2025, which begins July 1, 2025 (24-O-1101). The general fund budget totals approximately $854 million. The Council will also vote on adopting the millage rate (24-O-1100) and personnel actions (24-O-1234) for the fiscal year. Other items on the agenda include: • An ordinance authorizing the transfer of $6 million to fund the Atlanta Development Authority’s Invest Atlanta Grocery and Fresh Food Providers initiative to increase access to fresh food in low-income, low-access neighborhoods in Atlanta. The goal is to improve access to affordable fresh food within a half-mile of at least 85 percent of Atlanta residents by 2025 (24-O-1278). • An ordinance to amend the City of Atlanta’s regulations related to taxicab and rideshare services to raise the permissible age of vehicles operating at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from seven years to 10 years to maintain a level playing field among vehicle-for-hire services (24-O-1031).
