Every so often, a mineral fake slips through the cracks, catching even seasoned collectors off guard. Here’s one that some of you may already be familiar with, though it only recently came to our attention. 📝First off, it’s important to recognize that many manipulated specimens are openly offered by some reputable dealers with clear identification and proper disclosure. (Including pieces such as these.) When sold with transparency, it is NOT an issue. 🤔When does it become a problem? A.) When sellers knowingly distribute the material as natural, despite being aware of the manipulations, or B.) When the material changes hands over time and critical information about its origins is lost. In the latter case, well-meaning individuals may inadvertently acquire and resell a piece as fully natural, despite it being altered. 🔍So, what is this particular "fake"? These are fluorites that have been carefully cleaved to mimic a dodecahedral shape, then treated with an acid/ corrosive substance to subtly reproduce the texture of natural growth faces. Their more complex shape (compared to the typical cleaved octahedrons often seen at shows and shops) and more pronounced texture can make them appear deceptively natural. 💡They serve as a valuable reminder for all of us to stay informed about the various techniques being applied to minerals, and to ensure that we’re passing along all the relevant facts to future owners. Ok, so this was one of my strangest and surreal experiences in Jordan. Being on the lowest point on earth, realising how nature has its own way of providing resources to heal, and humans understanding this centuries ago! Tbh, as a non-swimmer, I was scared & sceptical.
