Our Artemis II crew will be going around the Moon... but they’ll always find their way back home 🌎 During this complex and far-reaching journey, the four crew members will travel ~685,000 miles looping around the Moon and back to Earth in a span of about 10-days. The mission follows a free-return trajectory that uses the gravity of the Earth and Moon to naturally guide the crew home. During the mission, the astronauts are going to get a unique perspective of the Moon while testing Orion’s systems and performing science operations. The view shows our planet half-lit above the cratered lunar far side, with no atmosphere or blue sky softening the horizon. That image matters because it is the first crewed lunar-flyby Earthset of the Artemis era, a modern echo of Apollo 8's Earthrise from 1968. As Orion crossed the far side, the crew also described craters, ancient lava flows, surface cracks, ridges, and color changes that scientists use to read lunar history. The strange part is the timing: Earth was literally dropping out of sight at the same moment mission control was about to lose the spacecraft's signal. For nearly three quarters of an hour, the Moon itself stood between the crew and Earth.
