From all the in water activities I’ve done, The Jellyfish Lake in Misool, Raja Ampat takes a special place in my list. This is a saltwater lake with thousands of golden jellyfish. Now if you’re wondering how the jellyfish got in there?? Several thousand years ago, rising sea levels and geological shifts may have isolated these jellyfish in the lake, preventing them from returning to the open ocean. Over generations, these jellyfish adapted to the conditions of the lake, eventually losing their ability to sting, as there was no need for defense mechanisms in their isolated environment so we were able to swim around without the problem of getting stung. However, like other fragile ecosystems there are some rules, it’s essential to approach the Jellyfish Lake with respect and care to preserve its unique biodiversity. Also there is a quite steep 40 mins hike just to get to to lake so this is not for everyone! (specifically if you wanna bring your camera). Misool Jetty - One of my favorite all time experiences is to slip into the water right off the @misool.resort jetty and witness firsthand the incredible abundance and diversity of a marine life, and especially the amount of sharks, that now thrive in their fully protected sanctuary. A decade and a half ago this area was overrun with Shark fisherman and bomb fishers, and now through the dedication of the Misool rangers, and with the full support of the community, the recovery has been nothing short of astonishing!
