Manual muscle testing 💪 Detailed grading of muscle strength is more important in relation to prognosis than to diagnosis. *The grading relies on the examiner’s clinical judgment and experience, applying “moderate” or “maximal” manual resistance based on the patient’s ability to hold the test position. Muscle strength testing basic rules: 1. Position the subject for best body fixation (supine, prone, or side-lying). 2. Stabilize the proximal or adjacent part for accurate testing. 3. Use antigravity positions when appropriate to assess true muscle action. 4. Use horizontal plane movements for weak muscles that can’t work against gravity. 5. Apply pressure opposite to the muscle’s line of pull. 6. Apply pressure gradually, letting the subject prepare to resist. 7. Ensure pressure is uniform, not localized, to avoid discomfort. 8. Use a long lever for better strength discrimination, unless contraindicated. 9.
