Honestly, I’m kind of reluctant to post this. I’m obsessive about my work and I never want to put anything out into the world — builds or content — that’s anything less than perfect (or at least the best I am capable of). But I’m trying something new: falcate bracing on a ukulele, and I’m excited enough to share.   Trevor Gore’s work sent me down the rabbit hole of modal tuning and empirically tested instruments.  Originally, I became deeply interested in David Hurd’s Left Brained Lutherie → which led me to Trevor Gore’s books (and class) → and more recently Sam Guidry and Giuliano Nicoletti’s work have also been something I’ve studied.   I took a modal-tuning class with Trevor last year and got to experience a modally tuned, falcate-braced guitar up close and it blew me away: giant, well-balanced, delicate to the touch, with a big, shimmery sound.   I’ve built two ukes so far using this approach. There’s a lot to it, but one of the most noticeable things is Falcate uses carbon fiber under each bent-lam spruce brace and again on top for maximum transmission of the string energy — The problem is epoxy + carbon is notoriously messy inside the box, and these tops aren’t tidy like my usual work.
