They called it a concrete nightmare. ⬇️ Today it’s an architectural icon. In 1952, Le Corbusier completed the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille, a radical answer to the post-WWII housing crisis. But this wasn’t just an apartment block. It was a “vertical city.” Inside one single megastructure: – 337 duplex apartments – internal “streets” every third floor – shops, hotel rooms, a kindergarten – and a public rooftop terrace with running track and sculptural ventilation towers Corbusier applied his Modulor system: a proportional grid based on human scale, to standardize dimensions and optimize spatial efficiency. Many say he was inspired by large Cruise ships. The interlocking duplex typology allowed cross-ventilation and double-height living spaces within a dense slab configuration. Material? Raw béton. This project later became one of the foundations of modernism, influencing generations of mass housing worldwide. Tra tutte le chiese moderne dislocate nel territorio italiano la Chiesa di Maria Santissima Immacolata a Longuelo, Bergamo, è sicuramente una delle più uniche ed affascinanti. Progettata da Giuseppe “Pino” Pizzigoni tra il 1961 e il 1965, si tratta di un vero e proprio esperimento architettonico, una struttura ardita che esplora a fondo la versatilità di un materiale come il cemento armato attraverso un complesso sistema di sostegni, tiranti e sottili membrane, che definiscono un’opera fortemente ispirata all’archetipo della tenda di Mosè nel deserto. Tra le suddette membrane quella che spicca maggiormente è senza dubbio la grande volta che costituisce l’ingresso, la quale non solo si protende in maniera piuttosto accentuata verso l’alto bensì sembra anche fuoriuscire rispetto al volume principale della chiesa, risultando quasi un elemento a sé stante. Se all’esterno, poi, predomina la componente strutturale, esplicitata ed evidenziata soprattutto nelle “ali” laterali, all’interno lo spazio si presenta molto più morbido ma altrettanto dinamico, immediatamente leggibile nella sua interezza ma, al contempo, una scoperta continua. #giuseppepizzigoni #modernarchitecture #architecture #modernism #bergamo
