This one prompt WILL release tension and change your voice!! A lot of my students find success in this prompt as it helps them find a good balance of muscle and airflow when singing. This prompt can be quite counterintuitive but it really works when you execute it this way (esp. step no.3) Here’s what you need to do: 1. Sigh! - genuinely breathe in and give a deep sigh 2. Sigh on one note and let it glide off like a regular sigh 3. Notice how when we sigh, our throats are relaxed. Now while keeping the same sighing feeling, increase ‘muscle’ while sighing but maintain the same amount airflow. 4. Turn this into an exercise with a scale and try it in a song. Some people might ask what exactly is ‘muscle’. I like to think of it as the amount of energy you’re putting in your voice. If you find yourself unable to increase energy or muscle, you might need to check your breath! Your breath is the power of your voice. It literally creates pressure internally so we can sing! If you’ve been told that you’re too tense or your voice is tight, find some airflow in it and that should help ease the tension. Many vocal techniques from different styles are more closely related than you might think! Here's a little explanation of every step: 0. Whistle the melody first so your ears are primed to listen for the overtones (more precisely, the resonance tuned to multiples of the fundamental). 1. Find that resonance in vowel shapes that you are familiar with. Usually those vowels differ not only in brightness/darkness (which makes for the overtone melody), but also in openness/closedness (which we want to unify in the next step). 2. Moving the mouth (as well as larynx) less makes for a more stable vocal tract length, which allows you to move the second resonance (brightness/darkness) without moving the first resonance (openness/closedness), so it becomes easier for the brain to think of what you hear as a melody rather than nonsense vowels. 3. This specific maneuver used in some overtone singing styles couples the second and third resonances, which makes for an especially strong resonance cluster, or overtone melody. Some Austrian accents pronounce their Ls like this, but if you can't find this exact tongue shape, you can get a similar coupling with a Texan R sound. 4. Pressed phonation makes for a weaker fundamental frequency, which makes the overtone melody even clearer in comparison. This is the main difference between most Western overtone singing and Tuvan Sygyt. Other ways to increase clarity are: move the front of the tongue (even) less, and rely more on the back of your tongue; find the perfect pitch and volume (this is somewhat individual!); and make sure your nose is 100% closed. 5. In this example, I am using the Hyper-Compressed Fry technique. Pig Squeals can be done in all screaming techniques (for example False Cord, Inhale Fry...), but the more flexible you are in your technique of choice, the easier it will be to apply the overtone melody shaping you've practiced to a noisy source, where it can more obviously become what it has always been more accurately characterized by: a resonance melody.
