It was a big day today at #BlueJayPoint County Park! Seven monarch caterpillars hatched and showed off their beautiful new wings! The park has seen about a dozen hatch over the past few days with 20 to 25 more to go! @WakeGovParks

Supporting monarch butterflies 🐛🦋 ⁣ Supporting an endangered species like this is important work as long as it’s done with the correct supervision. Monarch numbers have been declining and there are lots of pests + diseases that impact their survival 🐛⁣ ⁣ Here I am helping a nonprofit organization that has been trained by different organizations to do this work responsibly and raise the monarchs in partnership with them. Monarch butterflies have been spotted in Texas on their annual migration south to Mexico for the winter. The monarchs migrate over several generations, according to the U.S. Forest Service. It takes three to four generations of butterflies to complete the entire migration cycle from start to finish. Climate change and habitat loss are a significant threat to monarch butterflies. Two ways you can help: plant native nectar plants and milkweed and report sightings to @JourneyNorthorg to help researchers track the monarchs’ progress. In December, the US Fish & Wildlife Service announced their proposal to list the monarch butterfly as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In the past few decades, monarch populations have dropped by 80% in the Eastern US, and over 95% in the West. ESA protections are our chance to help monarchs now, before they are at the brink of extinction. But before any proposed protections become official, Fish & Wildlife has to, by law, take public feedback into consideration. This feedback can directly affect the specific protections monarchs get in the final decision! Everyone has until March 12th to voice their opinion, support, and concerns. That includes you — but also corporations like pesticide companies, and groups opposed to any wildlife protections. That is why speaking up in support of protecting the monarch butterfly is so important.
