@kimjongyeong8354 taught me how to throw medium sized moon jar with just 2kg of porcelain. Last time I visited Korea he showed me how to throw mini moon jar. After I told him I took a throwing class in Jingdezhen he said he will teach me how to throw a bigger one. And also told me that he can throw up to 50cm tall with one single throw not the two parts. Korean porcelain is very different from Jingdezhen porcelain. You can use relatively more water and it also feels quite different. And itโs fired in 1230 degrees Celsius while Jingdezhen porcelain is fired in 1300 or even higher. The video shows the entire process. #ceramics #pottery #porcelain #moonjar #korea

6kg Moon Jar ๐๐บThis form looks simple, but itโs one of the most demanding shapes to throw. The sunlight was perfect. It cast a crescent shadow as it got rounder ๐ Each step requires careful attention to wall thickness, balance, pressure control, water restraint, and proportion during shaping. A hallmark of Korean throwing techniques is using very little water, relying mostly on reusing slip instead ๐งIt introduces minimum fresh water which keeps the clay strong and prevents it from collapsing while allowing thinner walls. Throwing on the drier side also means I can simply lift the pot off the wheel right after throwing. The process starts with a few key stages: 1. Coning tall โฐ๏ธ The clay is coned while keeping it taller than it is wide. This step needs to be precise and effective because it helps maintain the center during opening. 2. Opening tall with the fist โ๐ผ This establishes height and internal volume early. If the opening starts like a puck instead, many pulls are required and the clay can become tired and overworked by the time the cylinder is established. The clay may already be too soft or thin when itโs time to stretch the form outward. 3. Palm pulls for an even, thick cylinder ๐บ A few controlled palm pulls bring the clay up while keeping the walls thick and even enough to support the bellyโs expansion later. 4. Shaping pulls ๐๐ผ From there, shaping pulls gradually guide the clay outward to form the belly. The inner hand stretches the clay outward from the inside while the outside hand provides minimal supporting pressure to maintain even wall thickness. After the first shaping pull, I pretty much stop using water, only adding a little to the rim when needed ๐ง The simplicity of the finished form hides how controlled the process really is. Much of it comes down to timing, restraint with water, and understanding how the clay wants to move on the wheel โจ Still experimenting, still pushing, and always chasing that harmony between structure and softness. This one ended up a little wider than my usual ๐ . . . . . #moonjar #๋ฌํญ์๋ฆฌ #wheelthrowing #pottery #ceramics

handbuilders, assemble! iโve been dying to make a moon jar but was limited in skill and patience so i tried this method using molds to create one! this may already exist but i havenโt seen any potters do this (yet) - so would you try this method or are you too traditional (aka skilled and patient)๐ #potteryhack #potterytutorial #moonjar

training under master potter Lee Hyang-gu @thepotterynine ๐บ in Koreaโs ceramic capital fresh off the wheel - and lifted without distortion he estimated this moon jar at around 8โ9kg of clay #ceramics #koreanceramics #koreanpottery #moonjar #wheelthrowing

Honestly, if pottery doesnt give me a backache, id be on it 16/7. (I still need my sleep) ๐ #pottery #ceramics #moonjar

one of my favorite ceramic forms is a moon jar! itโs a beautiful, round vase that originates from Korea that resembles a moon. I had a lot of fun mixing a digital approach with analog ceramics by first 3D designing my own moon jar on my computer. I wanted to get a lot of particular details down, like a very small base to make the โmoonโ look like itโs levitating, and a cute little lip. then I 3D printed and made a plaster mold so I can cast more ceramic moon jars! because the form is so timeless, they really take glaze so beautifully. I really love how elegant this form is and Iโm doing some more experiments with moon jars atm, also along the lines of digital to analog. more to come :) ๐โโฌ ๐

๐Another test on the moon๐ . Thereโs a lot of prep involved, but Iโm really enjoying pushing the possibilities of Nerikomi and coiling together. Each piece teaches me something newโand Iโm excited to keep exploring different patterns ๐. . Coiling workshop registration is open! 1. Students never get tired of watching someone throw a Moon Jar- To me, itโs like someone from the crowd yelling,- โPlay Some Skynard!!!โ Whatever- students win #ceramics #moonjar #wheelthrowing #pottery #kilningit I think all pottery teachers should wedge up their studentโs Fโed up pots at the end of class, and try to throw something. This experience really will teach you more about throwing and yourself, than you can possibly imagine. Self awareness, and operating in the present are the foundations of the wheel throwing experience You got this
