I’m often asked how I keep moss alive indoors in the open containers I grow it in, and the answer is simple—I keep it moist. And the secret to keeping it moist lies beneath the surface. Underneath the moss, at the bottom of the container, is a drainage layer–typically small lava rock or aquarium substrate. On top of the drainage layer, and directly beneath the moss, is a layer of moisture-retentive substrate—usually coconut coir. When I water the moss (I only use distilled water–never tap water because it can be harsh on moss), I make sure enough water saturates the moisture-retentive substrate and fills the drainage layer. This setup allows moisture to be pulled upward from the drainage layer as the water above slowly evaporates, helping keep the moss consistently moist. Once enough water has evaporated, I simply repeat the process.
