The Amazon Mud Turtle (Kinosternon scorpioides) is a widespread but rarely encountered species of turtle across much of the Neotropics. After over six years of working here in Madre de Dios, I finally encountered one of these adorable turtles as it was crossing a trail. These turtles rarely leave wet areas, and when they do it’s normally only to find new areas with water where they can stay submerged. Definitely one of the coolest species of reptile I’ve seen so far this year!

In this “found footage” style clip, a mysterious creature—resembling a humanoid turtle—is seen standing on the muddy banks of a river. The creature appears to observe its surroundings before gracefully (and surprisingly) leaping into the water with a massive splash. Shot through sparse winter brush, the video captures the eerie and surreal atmosphere of a modern-day urban legend. #Cryptid #FoundFootage #CGI #TurtleMan #RiverMonster

Today, we have a battle of the TINY TURTLES! The African Dwarf Mud Turtle, or Pelosius nanus, vs The North American Spotted Turtle, or Clemmys guttata. The African Dwarf Mud Turtle calls the swamps of Angola, Dominican Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Malawi home and has one of the most endearing personalities out of all turtle specie. The North American Spotted Turtle is a Northeastern United States native and calls bogs and marshes home and sports some of the prettiest pattern and color in the animal kingdom. Who wins? Mississippi Mud Turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis) a species of turtle native to the southeastern United States, particularly the Mississippi River drainage system. It is a subspecies of the common mud turtle, Kinosternon subrubrum. The Mississippi mud turtle is typically small in size, measuring up to 4-5 inches in length. It has a distinctive dark brown or black carapace (upper shell) with yellow markings and a lighter-colored plastron (lower shell). Like other mud turtles, it is primarily aquatic and can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats, including swamps, marshes, and slow-moving streams and rivers. They feed on a wide range of aquatic invertebrates, such as insects, snails, and crawfish. They may also eat small fish, amphibians, and plant material. #mudturtle #turtlesofinstagram #turtlelove #turtlelife #turtlepower #turtletuesday #reptilesofinstagram #herpetology #herptiles #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #freshwaterlife #aquaticanimals #pondlife #fieldherping #herpetology #tortuga #testudines #creeksploring #scicomm
