Building dreams in mud .. with passion and patience. Tried my hand at Wattle and daub Wall. We must appreciate the craftsmen who still have a hold on the vanishing techniques. Thank you, @sthala_architects, for your perseverance in making sustainable architecture accessible to the current generation.

Can a building stand strong with just mud and 5% cement? Yes. This technique is called Mud Concrete. Architect Ar. Rohan Nahar explains how soil mixed with a small percentage of cement can create a strong structural material capable of supporting 2–3 floors of construction. Instead of relying entirely on high-carbon materials, this method uses local soil, reduces cement usage, and still delivers structural strength and durability. Less cement. Lower environmental impact. And buildings that stay naturally cooler. Sometimes the solution isn’t inventing something new. It’s understanding the materials beneath our feet. "I SEE CRACKS. Your mud home is going to fall apart!" I get this comment sometimes so I thought an explanation video would help calm the fears of those who think cracking is bad! There are hundreds of different ways to design mud homes. Depending on the design, walls can be structural or not. Here's the difference! - Structural walls support the roof and need to be thick and solid. Think concrete block home! - Non-structural walls do not have anything to do with the strength of the building! For example, wattle and daub is a natural building wall system that is NON-structural. In fact, most modern homes are similar. They have an engineered framing and roof, and the walls are usually just drywall! In this video I show a slip-straw wall, which is an insulating natural building system unlike cob rammed earth, or other styles. The earthen plaster helps to create a smooth wall, and it is expected that the first thick layer will crack! This is because it requires a lot of sand and straw to do a crack-free thick layer. If you have less sand in your soil, it is sometimes better to use your local soil for layer one, and then do a proper high-sand content for the upper layers, which are thinner. This saves you money and allows you to build with what you have available (very sustainable!). So yes, there are cracks, and yes, I wanted them there! I have beautiful finished walls in my mud home that are strong and stable after many years. Have questions? Add them below, and I'll answer the top ones on my newsletter this week! #clayart #mudhome #clay #architecture #naturalbuilding #bamboo #womenwhobuild #mamastrong #toxinfreeliving #nontoxichome #naturalart #womeninstem #engineering

Each year we offer several workshops about different aspects of natural building. To get the link straight to your inbox comment "Earth". This rammed earth wall took a total of about 10 hours with 5 or 6 people. It is a lot of work on the front end but once you remove the final form it is totally worth it!! The mix we used after extensive testing with our soil was: 4 parts soil 2 parts sand 1/2 part lime Make sure to test your soil for it's rammed earth suitability. It is likely that the places where rammed earth was used extensively were also places where the soil needed little to no amendment. Rammed earth is found all over the world on every continent except Antarctica. Thanks @bonitonito for all the tests, knowledge and push to make our first rammed earth wall here! #rammedearth #naturalbuilding #ranchomastatal #permaculture #costarica #naturalhome

Every day, the river brings us trash, mostly plastic and glass bottles tossed out by tourists, campsites, resorts, and villages upstream. While we knew that conversations around awareness would take time, we began with what was right in front of us. One bottle at a time, we built our walls, playfully and creatively. And slowly, the relationship shifted. What was once waste became resource and a colourful part of what we now live with. Come, experience building Urvi. We are open for volunteers (also for short duration) who are mindful, creative and compassionate. #lifesturvi #reuse #urviearthcentre #mudhouse #mudwallswithglassbottles #volunteering
